▶ Aiming to Develop a Platform for Real-Time Carbon Emissions Monitoring
▶ First National R&D Project on Carbon Reduction Initiated by a Semiconductor Company in Gyeongnam Region
Haesung DS, a semiconductor component manufacturer (CEO: Choi Young-sik), announced that it has been selected as the lead company for a national R&D project initiated by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) of South Korea, focused on carbon reduction technology.
The project, titled “Development and On-site Demonstration of a Digital AI Platform for Carbon Footprint Management to Address Global Carbon Regulations and Optimize Eco-friendly Manufacturing Value Chains,” is valued at 9.7 billion KRW (approx. $7 million USD) and will be conducted over a 45-month period. As the main contractor, Haesung DS will oversee the entire research and development process. Participating organizations include AIPIM, WISEnut, the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), and Kyung Hee University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation.
This project is part of a strategic initiative by MOTIE and the Korea Planning & Evaluation of Industrial Technology(KEIT) to proactively address global environmental regulations and achieve carbon neutrality. Since the international pressure from the EU and U.S. continues to grow, the need for digital carbon footprint management and eco-friendly product oversight has become more urgent. The project is expected to serve as a key solution, combining advanced technologies with life cycle assessment (LCA) to enable innovation in smart manufacturing. Notably, Haesung DS is the first semiconductor company in the Gyeongsangnam-do region to lead a national R&D project focused on carbon reduction, drawing significant attention within the industry.
The AI platform developed through this research will quantify and analyze greenhouse gas emissions in real time across the manufacturing process. By doing so, it will enable optimization of production lines to reduce both energy consumption and greenhouse gas output. The resulting technology will be designed to be cost-effective for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), supporting integrated carbon footprint management across entire manufacturing supply chains and enhancing the competitiveness of the regional industry.
A Haesung DS representative stated, “On May 22, government officials and stakeholders from related institutions gathered at our Changwon plant to discuss the project’s direction and anticipated outcomes, marking the official start of development.” They added, “We aim to proactively respond to global environmental regulations and build core technologies for an eco-friendly manufacturing ecosystem. Through the project, we hope to contribute not only to the local semiconductor industry but also to the broader South Korean manufacturing sector.”
